See what marking costs your school. Then see it shrink.
Marking eats teachers' hours and school budgets. Set your own numbers below to see how much time and money evaleasy could give back in a year, with teachers' checking time and the cost of credits already included.
What does exam marking really cost a school?
Far more than it looks, because nobody sends an invoice for it. Marking is paid for in teachers' salaries, in extra payments to outside markers, and in the evenings and weekends that teachers give up. Every hour spent adding up totals is an hour not spent planning a lesson or helping a student who's stuck.
Take a school of 500 students who each sit 12 papers a year. That's 6,000 papers. At 8 minutes a paper, someone spends 800 hours marking, which is 100 full working days. At $10 an hour, that comes to $8,000 a year.
How is the saving worked out?
The calculator compares two costs, using your figures. It doesn't assume anything about your school that you can't see and change.
- By hand: papers a year, multiplied by the minutes to mark each one, multiplied by what an hour of marking costs you.
- With evaleasy: the credits for every page, at the cheapest mix of whole packs, plus the time a teacher spends checking each report at the same hourly cost.
- The saving is the first number minus the second. Teachers' checking time stays in the sum, because a teacher still has the last word on every paper.
How do savings change with the size of a school?
The bigger the school, the bigger the saving. These use the example's figures: 12 papers a student, 6 pages a paper, 8 minutes by hand, 1 minute to check, and $10 an hour.
| Students | Papers a year | Hours saved | Cost by hand | Cost with evaleasy | Saved a year |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 100 | 1,200 | 140 | $1,600 | $460 | $1,140 |
| 500 | 6,000 | 700 | $8,000 | $2,260 | $5,740 |
| 2,000 | 24,000 | 2,800 | $32,000 | $9,040 | $22,960 |
Common questions
- Is this a guaranteed saving?
- No. It's an estimate from the figures you enter, and your real result depends on your papers, your handwriting and how closely your teachers check the reports. Try evaleasy on a class you've already marked to see how long checking takes for you.
- What should I put for the cost of an hour of marking?
- Use what you pay outside markers per hour, or a teacher's salary divided by their working hours if your own staff do the marking. Even when marking happens unpaid in the evening, those hours have a cost, so a fair hourly figure is still worth using.
- Will teachers still need to check the marks?
- Yes, and the calculator counts that time. evaleasy marks each paper, then a teacher checks the report and has the final say. Set the checking slider to how long that takes your teachers.
- Why is the evaleasy cost not a smooth line?
- Because credits are sold in whole packs, the calculator uses the cheapest mix of packs that covers your pages. Any credits left over stay on your account, as credits don't expire.
